乍聽樂隊Beirut那滿載歐陸風情的歌曲，你會以為他們是來自歐洲大陸某地傳統樂團，但原來由年輕樂手Zach Condon所領軍的Beirut是一隊植根美國紐約的Baroque-pop/indie-folk樂隊，Beirut推出第一張大碟 ”Gulag Orkestar”時，Zach Condon竟然還是個不到20歲的小伙子，這是一個應該玩Punk樂的年紀，但Zach Condon卻玩起成熟而典雅的另類民謠。

跟很多獨立音樂人的出身相近，他十多歲的時候已經在卧房裡，用簡單的器材，錄製自己的歌曲，自作自樂，他的才情在那時並未有太大發揮，直至16歲那一年，這個對於Zach Condon來說決定性的一年，才正式啓蒙了他日後不一樣的音樂之旅，那年他周遊歐洲列國，當別人著眼於熙來攘往的景點時，他眼裡所觀察到的卻是當地古樸的東歐風土人情，而且更深深被當地傳統音樂所吸引，後來決意把這種歐陸音樂帶到遙遠的美國彼岸。


返國後他以黎巴嫰首都貝魯特(Beirut)為自己掌旗的樂隊命名，不久便推出了第一張大碟” Gulag Orkestar”，是年2006。Zach Condon在首張大碟裡已經急不及待展現他的創作才華，音樂裡盡出了你能夠數得出的傳統樂器，如手風琴、大提琴、小提琴、曼陀羅琴、色士風、笛、大號、小號嗽叭等等，豐富得難以想像，加上他的精心編排，歌曲風格遊走於歐陸民謠與優雅的Baroque-pop之間，你彷彿能透過這張作品體驗東歐古樸風情，感受吉卜賽人的熱情奔放，再加上Zach Condon一把不屬於他年紀的成熟聲線，別具韻味，亳無難道地融合在他的傳統音樂裡，這一切怎教人不驚喜。”Gulag Orkestar” 這張處女作令Beirut得到非常不錯的評價，亦使Zach Condon迅速地在獨立音樂圈裡站隱陣腳。
